Primary Source Lesson Plan--Maps
Essential Question: How does geography effect the culture living in it?

Objectives:
  • Read and analyze maps
  • Make connections between the geography of LaPaz, Mexico as portrayed in John Steinbeck's novel The Pearl and Victoria, British Columbia as portrayed in Margaret Craven's novel I heard the Owl Call My Name and the Carlisle Indian School.
  • Make connections between culture and geography.

Materials:
  • Map of Lititz, PA
  • SEA worksheet for analysis of map(s)
  • Mobile cart with a computer for each student
  • Novels: The Pearl, I Heard the Owl Call My Name
  • Websites: Zoomable map of BCS, Mexico >
Kingcome Inlet
  • Venn Diagram for comparison of the regions in the two novels.

Procedure: Students will work in pairs for this project.
  • Accessing question: : What would Lititz be like without the Lititz Run? Students will look at maps of Lititz and talk about the impact of Lititz Run on the community at its founding and today.
  • Students will view and analyze (SEA) the maps focusing primarily on the geopolitical characteristics of the two settings, the Baja Peninsula and British Columbia.
  • Students will debate informally the importance of geography on culture.
  • In journals students will reflect individually on how they would be different had they grown up in Baja or British Columbia.

Students will be required to think critically about the relationships geography and culture.
